CFA vs CPA in 2026: Which One Should You Choose?

FT Pol Molas | Última actualización: 16 agosto 2026

The CFA and the CPA are two of the most respected qualifications in finance, but they point you toward very different careers. One opens doors in investment management and analysis. The other is the gold standard in accounting, audit and tax. This guide compares both for 2026 across structure, time, cost and career, and helps you decide.

The one line difference

The CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) is for people who want to work in investments: asset management, equity research, portfolio management and similar roles. The CPA (Certified Public Accountant) is for people who want to work in accounting: audit, tax, financial reporting and controllership. If you love analysing companies and markets, lean CFA. If you love the rigour of accounting and want to sign off on financial statements, lean CPA.

Exam structure compared

CFA. The CFA Program has three levels, taken in order. Level 1 is 180 multiple choice questions across two sessions of 135 minutes. Higher levels add item sets and, at Level 3, written responses. Level 1 is offered four times a year, in February, May, August and November. The curriculum spans 10 topics, with Ethics, Financial Statement Analysis, Equity and Fixed Income carrying the most weight.

CPA. Since the CPA Evolution update in January 2024, the CPA exam uses a Core plus Discipline model. You take three Core sections, Auditing and Attestation (AUD), Financial Accounting and Reporting (FAR), and Taxation and Regulation (REG), plus one Discipline of your choice: Business Analysis and Reporting (BAR), Information Systems and Controls (ISC), or Tax Compliance and Planning (TCP). Each section is four hours and mixes multiple choice questions with task based simulations. Core sections test year round, while Discipline sections run in quarterly windows.

Time to complete

The CFA is a marathon. CFA Institute suggests around 300 hours of study per level, and with three levels offered on a limited schedule, most people take two to four years to finish all three.

The CPA is usually faster. Many candidates pass all four sections within 12 to 18 months, helped by year round testing for the Core sections. You also need to meet an education requirement first, commonly around 150 semester hours for licensure, though the exact rule depends on your state board.

Cost compared

CFA 2026 fees. For the 2026 exams there is no enrollment fee. Registration per level is USD 1,140 at the early bird deadline and USD 1,490 at the standard deadline. A new Access Scholarship can reduce the total registration fee to USD 400 for those who qualify, with four application windows a year. Across three levels, plan for several thousand dollars including study materials.

CPA 2026 fees. NASBA guidance puts each CPA section at about USD 262.64, so roughly USD 1,050 for all four sections, plus an application fee of around USD 96 to 180 depending on your jurisdiction. On top of that you should budget for an education evaluation, review materials, an ethics exam in many states, and licensing fees, which together push the real total well past the exam price alone.

In short, both are a meaningful investment. The CFA tends to cost more in registration per attempt, while the CPA adds more peripheral costs around licensure.

Careers and earning potential

CFA careers are most valued in asset and wealth management, equity and credit research, portfolio management, risk management, and investment banking and corporate finance. It signals deep investment knowledge and is often expected for buy side analyst and portfolio roles.

CPA careers are most valued in public accounting and audit, tax advisory, financial reporting and controllership, and corporate accounting leadership, up to CFO. Crucially, in the United States only a licensed CPA can sign certain audit reports, which gives the CPA a legal moat the CFA does not have.

Both can lead to strong, six figure careers over time. The right one depends on the work you actually want to do day to day, not on which sounds more prestigious.

Which should you choose?

Choose the CFA if: you want to work with investments, markets and portfolios; you enjoy analysing companies and economic data; you see yourself on the buy side or in research.

Choose the CPA if: you want a career in accounting, audit or tax; you value a license with legal authority in the US; you want a faster, more structured path to qualification.

Can you do both?

Yes, and some finance professionals do, especially those in roles that bridge accounting and investing. But doing both is a multi year commitment. For almost everyone, the smart move is to pick the one that matches your target career, finish it, and only consider the second later if your role genuinely needs it.

FAQ

Is the CFA harder than the CPA?
They are hard in different ways. The CFA covers a broader investment curriculum over three levels, while the CPA demands deep accounting precision across four sections. Pass rates and difficulty vary by section and level.

Which pays more, CFA or CPA?
Both can lead to six figure careers. Pay depends more on role, industry and location than on the qualification alone.

Should I do the CPA first because it is faster?
Only if accounting is your goal. Do not pick a qualification just because it is quicker. Pick the one that matches the career you want.
